2018 chevrolet equinox ls review9/26/2023 ![]() We also found exemplary braking with a 70-mph-to-zero stopping distance of 161 feet, a surprising 5-to-23-foot advantage over competitors. All but the Escape were equipped with all-wheel drive when we tested them. Riding on 235/50R-19 Hankook Ventus all-season radials, the new Equinox saw cornering grip jump from 0.79 to 0.86 g, allowing this new version to spank key competitors such as the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4. Exceeding $40K will be possible when the powertrain lineup fleshes out this summer with a 137-hp 1.6-liter turbo-diesel and a 252-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter gas-burning four-cylinder.Ĭompared with the previous Equinox, this third-gen model is some 350 pounds lighter on our scales, a significant slimming down given its greater load of creature comforts and safety features. A teen-driver system sets speed warnings and maximum audio-system volume and can be programmed to provide a tattletale report card.Īdding but two options to our lavishly outfitted Premier hiked its total price past $39,000: $395 for Cajun Red paint plus a $3320 Sun, Sound, and Navigation package that includes a power sunroof, 19-inch bright-finished aluminum wheels, navigation, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, and HD radio reception. An elaborate array of sensors and cameras provides blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, rear park assist, a rearview camera, and a bird’s-eye view of your perimeter. This Equinox’s list of advanced safety features includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automated low-speed braking, although adaptive cruise control is not included. The OnStar communication system includes a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, while the Chevy MyLink setup is commanded through an 8.0-inch touchscreen and offers Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. Starting at $35,330 with all-wheel drive, the Premier includes a six-speed automatic transmission, LED head- and taillamps, leather trim, driver and front passenger seats with both heat and ventilation, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity entry, and remote starting. It handles reasonably well for a family SUV, was reasonably entertaining on the great mountain roads in Salalah, but smooth, easy and friendly to pilot around town.HIGHS: Excellent handling, roomy accommodations, comprehensive safety and convenience features.Īs its name suggests, the Premier is as good as it gets for the Equinox, the top rung of a four-step ladder. Admittedly though 260lb ft is better, and with all the kit and lower top end price than the Honda, it’s definitely worth considering the full bells and whistles edition. How is it on the road? Don’t be put off by the 1.5 – we did drive it and it felt up to the task completely, 203lb ft it plenty to keep this moving. Good luggage room, almost as much rear legroom as the CR-V, a comfortable seating position up front, with lots of toys and gadgets including drivers’ aids such as lane-keep and autobraking endows this car with great showroom appeal. It also gets 19-inch allows, leather upholstery, 8-inch screen and driver’s aids such as auto-braking and lane-keeping alert through vibrating seats and so on. The range-topping Premier (4WD only) gets a larger power unit – a 2.0-litre Turbo with 252bhp and 260lb ft of torque, mated to a 9-speed automatic. You then step up to an LT 2WD at AED82,900 ($22.5k) with remote start, power driver’s seat and rear camera. The base model LS (as with Honda) is only a two-wheel drive and comes with a 1.5-litre turbo (the CR-V gets a same-sized engine in the States, but that more modern unit is not on sale here yet) which puts out 170bhp and 203lb ft or torque mated to 6-speed auto. The prices we’ve been given for the Chevrolet Equinox start from AED76,000 ($21k) and rise to AED110,900 (30k) – ah, got your interest now have we? We just reviewed the all-new CR-V – read that here – and it’s very good indeed with prices starting from AED89,900 ($25k) and rising to AED126,000 ($34k). So unsurprisingly, that’s the car the Equinox is benchmarked against, matches in size, beats in equipment and undercuts on price. It sits in the same segment as, and goes against, the Honda CR-V – which dominates. Not a brand name commonly known, but one that is massive in America – in fact this is Chevrolet’s second biggest car after the Silverado pickup truck. ![]() Hmm… Equinox, sounds vaguely familiar?
